CP 216
A comprehensive study of a current commercial microprocessor, its architecture and assembly language. Emphasis on (1) the relationship between architecture, assembly language and system operation, and (2) the relationship between assembly language, high level languages and operating systems. Prerequisites: CP220/PC220 (or CP120/PC120) and CP164 (or CP114)
Awful awful course, so many people failed. If you can avoid taking this course with bernard, DO SO. Take it with fatima, she's much much better!!
Content isn't the most complicated thing ever (helps to understand how computers work very in-depth) but it needs a lot of time to really sink in and practice questions to make sure you have the right methods (especially for multiplication/division, Bernard seems to use the least common and most convoluted ways). The tests/exams are what really mess you up, he seems to try his absolute best to make you answer wrong instead of actually testing your knowledge...but looking back at those answers helps a lot to prepare for the next one, especially for the final. Don't underestimate this course if you have to take it with Bernard Chiu....coming from someone with all 12s in 212, 214, 220 and 264, I didn't lock in enough and couldn't break 10 in this course.
if you can, take this course with Yichen Zhang. Many people in my section of the course were coming from a fail in 216 beforehand, and all of them agree that Zhang was much easier than the others. All that's required in his course is 4 tests. 2 quizzes, a midterm & final, and all of these are based on the slides. Also, he gives a practice test before every ***essment (which is identical in format)
