MU 502
Clinical MPT Skills I
Students learn to develop foundations of core psychotherapy
skills and work within musical frameworks based upon
established music psychotherapy theories with diverse client
populations. Song writing and clinical improvisation techniques
for music psychotherapy interventions are explored and
experienced through practical exercises and role-playing.
Pre-composed music and musical forms are analyzed to gain an
understanding of clinical improvisation and diversity of musical
styles including non-European musical traditions. Students
learn to structure and facilitate the music therapy process,
formulate the direction of therapy, and assess the needs of the
client by applying variety of musical techniques. This course
equips students for MU504, first clinical placement.
