This course deals with the fundamentals of organic chemistry. The topics considered include carbon compounds and chemical bonds, introduction to functional groups, acids and bases in organic chemistry, nomenclature in organic chemistry, stereochemistry of carbon compounds, ionic reactions: nucleophilic substitutions and elimination, radical reactions, reactions and synthesis of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides. Prerequisites: CH131. Exclusions: Exclusion: CH202, CH204. Notes: Students pursuing the following degrees must take this first year chemistry course: Honours BSc Chemistry, Honours BSc Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Honours BSc Chemistry and Biology, Honours BSc Chemistry and Mathematics, Honours BSc Chemistry and Physics; 3 lecture hours, 3 weekly lab hours.
